Holton Township in Muskegon County, Michigan, has adopted a resolution to safeguard the Second Amendment from “red flag” regulations and formed a militia to preserve the rights of gun owners.

Four out of the five board members of Holton voted in favor of the motion, thus designating the town, which has a population of 2,500, as a “Second Amendment Sanctuary.”

The resolution states that the people of Holton Township, represented by their elected members of the Holton Township Board, have officially designated Holton Township as a Second Amendment Sanctuary. This designation aims to protect the fundamental rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution for the residents of Holton Township.

The declaration states that the Holton Township Board is determined to resist any encroachment on the constitutional right of law-abiding individuals to possess and carry firearms. As residents of Holton Township, we assert our inherent rights, our autonomy, and our Liberty, which are safeguarded by the Constitution of the United States of America.

In an additional note, the township’s board extended an invitation to eligible people to join the Holton Township Militia with the purpose of preventing any violation of our Second Amendment rights, as outlined in the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution. In order to become a member of the militia, individuals must meet two requirements: they must be at least 18 years old and successfully pass a comprehensive government background check.

In addition, the town declined to recognize “red flag” legislation that grant the state the authority to seize a taxpayer’s firearm if there is a concern that they would pose a threat to themselves or others.

The addition said that Holton Township will not recognize any new legislation related to red flag laws or any other violation of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. Holton Township will firmly reject any new regulation that attempts to ban or hide the practice of open carry.

The declaration represented a bold opposition to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who, in May, enacted a red flag law that allows police officers, healthcare professionals, and concerned family members to obtain a court order to temporarily seize firearms from individuals who pose a risk of harm to themselves or others.

Following the resolution, Whitmer promptly enacted another law that bars those convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors from purchasing or possessing firearms for a duration of eight years.

Holton Township is classified as a “purple” town, indicating an equal distribution of Republican and Democrat voters.

Although Holton is not the initial municipal government to proclaim itself a Second Amendment Sanctuary, as reported by Bridge Michigan, with 53 counties in Michigan having already done so, it is the first to formally establish a militia.
